“To start off a trip by pedaling past the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial I thought to myself it can’t get any better, but it did”

The adventure begins November 5 with a transfer from Front Royal to accommodations included in Washington DC.

November 6 starts off with a morning 12 mile ride circumnavigating the points of interest in Washington DC. This includes riding past the United States Capitol and down Memorial Mall before having a photo op in front on the Washington Monument. Next, roll along the reflecting pond over to the Lincoln Memorial and then past the Arlington Cemetery and the Pentagon. Then it is back to the hotel for breakfast before rolling onto the paved Washington Old Dominion Rail bed. The railroad bed will turn to rolling open country roads.  End day one at the base in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.

November 7 - After a few quiet miles riders will roll onto the Skyline Drive where the road pitches up with a series of long steady climbs. Much of the 70 mile day is spent pedaling along the ridgeline enjoying the serene beauty of the Appalachian skyline.  Finish the day with a quick descent down to a secluded mountain lodge.

November 8 - Out of the gate climb up to skyline drive and soak in the morning sun.  Continue to roll south climbing and descending following the ridge line.  When Skyline Drive ends, the next adventure of the Blue Ridge Parkway begins.  Life on the parkway has only two skill sets. Climbing and descending.  The day ends with a stretch of the legs exploring historic Lexington, the home of Stonewall Jackson.

A cyclist riding on a winding road through a lush, green, wooded area.

November 9 - The final day starts out with a morning climb back up to the parkway followed by a long plunge down to the James River, the lowest point on the parkway.  This is followed by one of the longest climbs on the parkway climbing to Apple Orchard Mountain, the highest point on the parkway in Virginia.  This is followed by another long steady descent into downtown Roanoke. Freshen up with a shower and then catch a bite while bikes get packed before heading to the airport or back to Front Royal.
